Knitting a Rothko
Cumulative
durational performance and textile. Surrounded by a sea of yarn, I knit
continuously to add to a large panel of fabric, echoing a painting by
Mark Rothko. At pauses in the work, the panel is hung unfinished, trailing the yarn of its future making. This ongoing performance project, presented in galleries in
Cumbria, El Paso, Houston and London, examines the interface between
labour and creativity, and juxtaposes domestic, traditionally female
craft with monumental artwork.
